Interviewing a Carer

Rita works caring for the elderly at Christ the King Care Home. She has worked as a carer for more than eight years and this is what she thinks about working with Sisters Hospitallers.

Tell us a little bit about your life…

I live in Lichfield and I have two children aged 12 and 14. I have worked as a carer for more than eight years, first in a nursing home for seven years and then I came to Footherley Hall.

What do you like the most about your job?

I love my job as a carer, it’s so worthwhile! It makes me feel like I’m doing something special for each person I take care of. I wouldn’t change anything, it’s hard work but I wouldn’t want to do anything else.

Can you tell us about your daily activities?

I care for the residents and help them with their daily needs whilst still promoting independence.

You get to meet some great people. There is a sad side to it but it is still a job I would recommend

What is it like to work with the sisters?

I think the sisters are wonderful in every way. I love working with them, they are the most caring people I’ve ever met. They are so passionate about what they believe and it shows in the way they work. I feel privileged to work with them.

What do you enjoy the most about residents?

The residents are all so lovely… they make me smile. When they thank you for what you have done for them it always makes me feel like I’ve done something special. I enjoy chatting and laughing with them and always try to brighten their day.

Any really special moment you can recall?

I got called into the office by Tina. She told me that she had lots of amazing feedback about me and I felt so overwhelmed! I felt really appreciated and that wasn’t something I had before. I felt so happy that I was doing a good job.

What would you say to someone who is thinking to work as a carer?

Go for it because it is an amazing job with so many wonderful qualities. You get to meet some great people. There is a sad side to it but it is still a job I would recommend, especially at Footherley Hall. I’ve loved every moment and have some memories that I will always keep close to me.

I wouldn't want to do anything else
